Country Club East, Lakewood Ranch, Florida

Environmentalists often raise the concern that real estate development imposes an onerous burden on Mother Nature. But save such alarm bell for other newly built (or even existing and older) communities which is most definitely not for Country Club East. Yes, this is one of the newest of the eight gated communities of Lakewood Ranch in East Manatee County, Florida. It was, however, developed along the master plan of a green community that characterizes the entire Lakewood Ranch development that began since the mid-1990s.

In fact, it can be told that the Lakewood Ranch expansion in Country Club East even enhanced this part of Florida's natural surroundings. Center to this community is an 18-hole golf course that was designed by an internationally renowned architect, Rick Robbins. This layout is part of a trilogy of golf courses within Lakewood Ranch that has been certified as a nature sanctuary by the prestigious environment conservation group Audubon International. The other golf courses, the Arnold Palmer-designed King Dunes and Cypress Links, are located in the adjacent Country Club village, a sister neighborhood to Country Club East.

Beyond the greens and fairways of these world-class layouts are various other nature preserves that have built Lakewood Ranch's reputation as a green, environment-friendly enclave to live in. Interwoven into this real estate development are sidewalks and trails meandering for more than one hundred fifty miles within the 8,500 acre property. All told, there are also 3,500 acres of wetlands, lakes, and natural habitat for local wildlife within the estate. Additionally, there are several community parks conducive to outdoor-oriented activities such as family picnics and sports undertakings.

Besides the golf courses, activities at Country Club East can also center on the polo club of Lakewood Ranch and a clubhouse filled with various amenities. There are business parks too wherein a myriad of dining, shopping, and entertainment establishments are always ready to please and serve guests and residents. Growing families with kids have the convenience of having an excellent elementary school just outside of this community's gate.

But certainly, its environment-friendly character is what makes Country Club East and the entire Lakewood Ranch a standout among property developments. All homes and other structures within this enclave were built using materials and methods friendly to the environment and in conformance with the green standards of the Florida Green Building Coalition. The end-products are house models called Sweetgrass, Freshwater, and Blue Sky, all proclaiming that a truly green community has risen indeed in Country Club East.

Artificial grass lawns are the ideal alternative to natural lawns for households with any breed of dog. All artificial turf products on the market have been engineered specifically to withstand pet usage. There are several reasons why an artificial grass lawn is idyllic for families that own dogs. Dog kennels, dog hotels, and dog shows have adopted synthetic grass due to its pet-friendly nature. Several dog owners and households with dogs have also been pleased with artificial grass lawns for several reasons.

Artificial grass products are composed of polypropylene and polyethylene. These components are then melted together and extruded into long yarn-like strands that are later tufted together. All of the materials used are nontoxic for all dogs. Should any part of the product be ingested, it will not pose a serious threat to any pet's life. Washed sand is used to help synthetic grass blades maintain its upright aesthetic, even after heavy usage. Even the largest dogs that try to dig through the grass are not able to puncture or ruin artificial turf because of its strong backing. Most synthetic grass products have warranties that last for up to 10 years, should any lawn become torn or defective.

Tee-Off In Your Own Backyard

Charlotte has no shortage of golf courses; in fact an avid golfer could probably play a different course everyday for months. Sometimes it's nice just to work on your putting technique without having to go anywhere. I know I practice on the living room carpet, others pull out those portable putting greens. Wouldn't it be great to have a private putting green, right in your own backyard?

If you keep it small, surprisingly, it's not that big of a job, but maintaining it takes a certain amount of commitment and discipline. Here are the steps for creating your very own putting green.

Golf Materials,outdoor Golf

1. Decide if you will be doing the work or getting a contractor. It's more expensive to go with the latter, but someone else is doing the work, you'll get a quality result, and a warranty.

Tee-Off In Your Own Backyard

2. Choose between one of the synthetic grasses out there versus using natural grass. The climate, amount of sun or shade, and precipitation in your area will all factor in when deciding what type of grass to go with. Remember it needs to be mowed, fertilized, and maintained. Although synthetic materials have their own pros and cons, they are a lot less work.

3. Decide where the green will go, making sure you choose higher elevations that won't collect as much water. Avoid areas near buildings, bodies of water or trees. Also avoid close proximity to common pathways or play areas. Measure the space you've allotted for the green and obtain square foot measurements to get quotes from contractors or price out material if you plan on tackling the job yourself.

4. After enlisting help from your friends rent a bobcat or start digging with shovels. You need to dig out the entire area you've selected, removing any debris, rocks, weeds, etc. Get a soil sample while you're at it.

5. Plan your irrigation channels so that the water will run down hill and away from your green. Learn about the area, where the dry spots are, the shadows, where the low spots are, and where the sun shines on it. This knowledge will help you understand how to care for your putting green.

6. Research the type of grass that is best for your soil and conditions. It is vital when applying topsoil to elevate the green above the surrounding soil, and use a sandy loam topsoil for the root zone and a slope of about 1 percent for surface drainage.

7. Maintain and fertilize your green on a regular basis. You're working with a delicate balance and extremes in water, drought, fertilizing, or even excessive cutting can damage your lawn. Also, do not use the same types of fertilizer used on professional golf courses, they are highly toxic and may kill your neighbor's cat.

Have fun and don't forget to have a tee-off celebration with your friends when the job is done.

Straw case is one of the best practices for health and appearance of a house can play their territory. If the lawn is covered with straw in the fall, the maximum number of unwanted material is removed with minimal effort.

The straw is all light and fluffy and easy to remove the straw in my car. It 'so easy to calculate. Unlike the spring, when the straw is wet and heavy, and a lawn can be 2 months to repair the constant attention due to the strongHumidity and low temperatures.

The best time in the fall to a thatched healthy is the first week of September.
The grass is sometimes like new by following these steps:
Thatch early September, then you cut your grass low. On 15 September, aerate, seed and fertilize the lawn. Start irrigation. This gives your plants back to 2 weeks to germinate.

The best way to be sure to have a healthy lawn in spring properly prepare your lawn for winter. With the straw, seeding, fertilization and aeration in the fall, your lawn is able to withstand the winter in moss, water and mosquitoes.

To improve the soil or sound tired, take my advice, many homeowners, the application of a thin layer of mulch well after aeration, seeding and fertilizing.

Mulch protects the seed before germination. The main advantage of mulching is long term.Mulch breaks and adds nutrients and encourages worms and organic matter to soil.

Artificial Grass Manufacturing, Market Potential

The US carpet industry goes back hundreds of years, yet there are only a handful of skilled tufting companies that focus on manufacturing artificial turf materials; many are located here in the North America. Manufacturing plants, in the US, are currently located in Texas, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.

Artificial turf construction for sports fields, golf applications and landscape projects is a steadily growing industry. Volumes may exceed 140 million square feet this year, up a cumulative 40% over 2005 volumes. (est. 2007)

Golf Materials,outdoor Golf

Confidence in continued market expansion is evident as a major fiber and backing manufacturer, TenCate [Thiolon Grass], recently announced the allocation of million in renovation and expansion to their US based yarn and fiber operation in Tennessee and several key players in tufting mills in Georgia, Alabama and Texas; producing work for major brands Fieldturf, Sportexe, Sprinturf, Astoturf, among others; have recently expanded manufacturing and warehouse capacity or opened new facilities.

Artificial Grass Manufacturing, Market Potential

After an explosion in the sports field market 5-6 years ago, nearly doubling sales figures overnight, industry wide numbers are climbing at a healthy pace of 15-20% annually.

According to a study, published in 2006 by AMI Research the artificial turf market expansion, which includes a 30 to 40% growth factor in the fledgling landscape and leisure sports market, has been steady for over 4 years.

According to a spokesperson from Dow Chemical, manufacturers of artificial turf components, backing materials, infill and finished goods; sales of artificial turf materials account for approximately 5% of annual US carpet volume.

Dramatic growth outside the familiar sports market metaphor and consumer demands for a wider variety of choices for landscape and leisure sports has expanded the vision and development of new product lines.

Complimenting and enhancing known fiber manufacturing and texturing processes used in the carpet industry for eons; yarns and fibers for artificial turf are manufactured to provide realistic feel and natural colors; extreme UV protection, anti-static, anti-microbial, flame and slip-resistance. Take a photo tour of how yarn and fibers are manufactured at ASGi

Like so many industries today; artificial turf is manufactured by a few companies, repackaged, enhanced and sold under different brand names and delivered to local and regional markets through dedicated solutions providers, dealers, and distributors in a complex network of market partnerships where competitors one day are providing each other support the next.

While mills develop their own line of artificial turf styles, based largely upon the type of looms and finishing equipment they have, systems integrators engineer creative ways in which to deliver natural looking, durable goods to niche markets.

Responsible for over 90% of all artificial turf installed on the planet, sports field builders and systems integrators have driven the designs and engineered specifications for the artificial turf market since the beginning in the mid-1960s. Their customers' ideas and needs have set the tone of the styles, colors and textures of turf available.

These systems are branded and brought to market under a variety of nationally recognized names and are generally sold through experienced, professional, artificial turf installers; licensed builders and value added dealers and brokers.

Some brands only market online or through landscape materials and building supply centers. A few system integrators have structured their offerings as franchise partnerships and others as protected dealer or distributor territories.

Until just a few years ago, business development outside of the lucrative and dependable sports field market was almost non-existent. One sees little product awareness, identity or corporate branding campaigns in the residential and commercial (B2B) market space. Even today, investments in channel development; co-op, rebate, terms or flooring programs are just being explored by most to include a plan that will incorporate landscape and leisure sports uses as a viable growth market; along with several others such as uses in airport, public works construction projects and public and private daycare facilities.

Credit for the substantial investments made in product and engineering research, development and increases in capacity must go to the pioneers of artificial turf fibers, backing and tufting, along with the systems integrators and their sports field builders.

Acknowledgement must be given for building momentum and global adoption of landscape and leisure sports projects into residential and commercial property markets to the grass-roots efforts of the dealers and installers on the local and regional level.

It has been the long hours, goodwill and dollars invested in niche marketing efforts that has captured the attention of consumers and delivered the goods to neighborhood markets which have built the strong foundation for the continuing horizontal growth we are enjoying today. Keeping on track with today's growth, landscape and leisure sports market share will double in less than three years, providing increased opportunities for existing and new market partners.

No market is recession proof - however, double-digit growth during a construction slump speaks of the value of artificial turf as seen by consumers with funds to invest in high-value, professionally installed, home improvements.

And because Florida gets most of its rain in the summer, the winter months could well be the prime ones for enjoying time on your deck.

Getting outside and enjoying the fresh air can be vital to our health and sense of well being. Thanks to a variety of innovative deck heating systems, the outdoors can be a cozier place. What better way to enjoy the end of a day spent doing fall yard-work or walking in the neighborhood, than curling up beside your deck heater and grilling something nice on the barbeque?

Golf Materials,outdoor Golf

For homeowners, creating a truly usable deck space increases the value of your home, almost creating a whole other room in your home, but with far less effort than an actual interior renovation. So what are some of the options for making outdoor living comfortable?

Outdoor Living All Year Long

A covered deck has the advantage of never getting wet, and of keeping some heat in. For some, a roof over their deck might take away that open-sky feeling they love, but for others, it is just what they want to keep it cozy. It's a matter of personal choice. Translucent plastic corrugated roof panels might provide the best of both worlds, and are relatively easy to install for a person with carpentry skills.

To keep the deck cozy, consider one of the many options for deck heating. There are several sizes of the lamp-post style of gas heater. Table-top heaters will give you about a 10-foot circumference of heat, while the taller heaters can give off about 20 feet of heat. These can be quite stylish, with an old fashioned design and made of sleek metal. These tend to come with safety features that shut them off completely if they get tilted, so there is no worry of it catching your wooden deck or wicker patio furniture on fire.

Infrared heaters are another option for deck and patio heating. Some are free-standing and some can mount to a wall. While they are a little less stylish than the lamp-post variety, they are surprisingly energy efficient and don't have any burning gas fumes.

If your outdoor space is cement, you may be able to have an outdoor, wood burning fireplace. There area variety of ceramic outdoor stoves. If you are considering this, check local bylaws to find out if wood fires are legal in your area.

With the variety of options available in deck heating and weatherproofing, you should be able to find an affordable and attractive way to make your deck or patio comfortable all year long.

Using artificial turf Vital to water conservation

We all love beautiful, lush green lawns, but we also need water to sustain life. With water conservation becoming increasingly important particularly in the dry Southwestern deserts, many people are considering replacing their real lawn with artificial grass. One of the primary benefits of installing synthetic turf products at your home or business is a reduction of water consumption, resulting in cost savings to you while benefiting the environment in multiple ways.

Some of the mainly responsible for water consumption are golf courses, commercial landscape, parks and even residential lawns. A typical use both 18-hole natural grass on the fairways and putting greens can be up to one million liters of water a day will need this summer! Much of the water was impregnated with chemicals from pesticides and alkali in the soil and drains into lakes and ponds. Artificial turf requires no fertilizer, pesticides, no mowing andreduces urban runoff caused by irrigation. It also reduces the amount of green waste such as grass clippings, going into local landfills. With more than 185 golf courses in the metropolitan area of Phoenix (Source: PhoenixGolfSource.com), an incredible amount of water and grass! Perhaps sometimes in the near future may reap the full commercial golf courses are rapidly improving the technology and benefits associated with artificial turf, but at this point, theUSGA does not have an official policy on artificial grass turf.

Park Benches - Making the Right Choice

When most people hear the words, "park bench", they envision one of two things - someone sitting at the local park feeding the pigeons or Forest Gump. No matter what your mind conjures up, these benches have been popular for a long time and will continue to be a place where people can sit down and relax while visiting the park or zoo.

Typically, these benches are made from wood or concrete simply because they are sturdy, durable, and look nice. However, manufacturers are coming up with new designs all the time that are functional, comfortable, and affordable. As more and more parks are trying to do things to clean up and enhance the beauty of the park, they are swapping out the older model park benches for something more appealing.

Golf Materials,outdoor Golf

Keep in mind that while benches are most commonly used in parks and zoos, they are also used at bus stops, hospitals, schools, shopping malls, golf courses, corporations, rental properties, associations and so on.

Park Benches - Making the Right Choice

One option that is considered for these locations is the pre-cast concrete garden bench. Not only is this type of park bench near impossible to damage but is also resistant to decay, and it can easily withstand the outside elements. With this new design of park bench, the number of replacements has gone way down. In addition, the pre-cast concrete bench looks really nice and modern while retaining some of the traditional style we have all come to expect out of a park bench.

Another popular type of outdoor bench is the teak bench. With this type of park bench, you will find nice variety of styles from which to choose. Teak has long been heralded as the premium wood for outdoor furniture as it has abilities to withstand the elements while maintaining its beauty. While the initial cost of teak park benches is higher than some other park bench styles, it is definitely worth considering as a long-term investment. Teak has an average lifespan of around 75 years and requires little maintenance and ages beautifully to a silver gray patina.

With the wide variety of options available, concrete and teak park benches are the preferred choice due to their durability, beauty and low-maintenance features. So when you are walking around your local park or zoo, do not think just about Forest Gump sitting on the park bench. Think about how nice it is to sit down, enjoy the scenery and relax for a while.

Video - Popular Golf and Accommodations in St. Andrews, Scotland

The U.S. Open golf tournament has just finished here in the States, and a great one it was.

It's now time to look to the next Major, the Open Championship. In looking ahead, I visited HomeofGolf.tv, a site created by my friend, Andy Brown. Even though this year's open isn't near St. Andrews, any golf trip to the UK wouldn't be complete without a pilgrimage to the Home of Golf.

While looking through the videos on HomeofGolf.tv, I came across the Fairmont Hotel video, shot while Andy was there for the Senior Scotish Open back in March. It looks absolutely fantastic. Between Andy's video of the Torrance Course at the hotel, which is near St. Andrews, and the hotel's own website, it is now at the top of my list of "must visits" in Scotland.

Have a look at this short video and visit the sites for more information.
